Muxtape revives the Mixtape

I was born after the cassette had already died out and been replaced by the CD.  Missing out on the cassette (if you can call it missing out), means I also missed out on the mix tape, which is always something I lamented.  Sure you can make your own playlists, but theres not nearly as much fun in that, and you’re never as surprised.

That’s why Muxtape looks so interesting to me.  Muxtape does what it sounds like it should; allow users to create their own mixtapes.  What is so special about it is that users not only upload a list of the songs, they can also upload the .mp3 files, allowing everyone to listen to the tapes.  While this raises red-flags in my head over piracy, you have to imagine that the guys over there have planned for this.  Here’s hoping that the RIAA lets this one slide.

I haven’t created my own yet– I’m having too much fun playing around with others’ tapes– but when I do, you can find it at http://nathanbent.muxtape.com/.

Have you tried out Muxtape?  If not, how do you listen to your music?

Walkoff!

Braves-Nats Opening Day, originally uploaded by Nathaniel Bent.

Zimmerman does it again! I’ve seen two of these now, first against the Yankees and now against the Braves.
And I can’t imagine two better (or worse) teams to see it against!

First impressions: National’s Ballpark

Few moments are met with as much anticipation and excitement in baseball as the opening of a new stadium.  New stadiums generally coencide with hugely improved teams (Orioles in ‘94), championship teams (Cardinals in ‘06), or just teams showing a renewed dedication to their region (Twins in ‘11+).  No matter which of the outcomes follows the Nationals, I’m sure the Nationals and the 39,000 who attended the first official game at the team’s brand new Stadium are as ready for it as anyone.

New Nationals Park!

My dad was lucky enough to grab a pair of opening day tickets at the Nationals’ new ballpark.

The game itself was pretty drab, bookended by two interesting and offensively-active innings.  I’ll have a write-up on the game and the stadium in the very near future.

Until then, you can peruse my Flickr photoset of some pictures I took at the game with Bessy.  When I have time, I plan on testing out the new gallery feature in wordpress, mainly to see how it compares to Flickr for post integration.

Way Too Early Review: Wordpress 2.5

I know that two posts in the same month is probably a big shock to you guys, but what the hell.

Anyone who’s either read a few blogs (or weblogs if you’re an asshole) or even started their own (as over 100 million people out there have) has noticed that most blogs are powered by Wordpress.  Wordpress, which evolved from b2, took the blogging thrown after Movable Type angered bloggers and the internet by being, well, not free.

Personally, I’ve been blogging (if you can call this a blog) with Wordpress off and on since the 1.5 version in 2005, on a blog that thankfully doesn’t exist anymore.  I’ve used every major new version since then, including 2.3.3 which was what this blog ran on until fifteen minutes ago.  Normally I don’t upgrade the software here until I’ve heard enough good things about it, but after seeing a few early screenshots and reading about the improvements it looked like it was a good bet.

Some thoughts on Firefox 3 beta(4)

I spend way too much time on my computer, and it seems like 90 percent of it occurs with Firefox running.  I’ve used Firefox for a few years, the first I can remember installing being the .8 version, and I have had no major problems with it, and I’ve never seen a reason to jump ship to another browser.

Nikon announces new DSLR

Being a pretty big (if new) Nikon junkie, the rumors around the CES were pretty interesting.  Sony announced their new DSLR, Canon talked about what they were aiming at, but Nikon had been silent.  That ended yesterday, when they announced their new DSLR, the D60.

Last.fm offers full tracks, “Frees the music”

Last.fm, one of my favorite and most visited websites, has recently upgraded their service to allow streaming of full tracks. In the past, Last.fm would allow a 30 second clip of music, much in the vein of iTunes.

While I kinda worry about how they are going to support this service– it’s going to put a heck of a load on their servers and on their pockets– but the idea of listening to an entire song or album before making the plunge and buying it is a god send.

Heres an excerpt from their blog post about it;

“As of today, you can play full-length tracks and entire albums for free on the Last.fm website.”

This is obviously a huge deal, because it one-ups not only music giant iTunes, but the popular music site Pandora.

I’d tell you more about it, but I’m too busy jamming out.

Rap is dying

Now I like a lot of music- my Last.fm has more genres than Cracked.com has penis jokes, but Soulja Boy’s newest video pushed me into a region of musical hatred I’ve never experienced before.

You have to see it to understand it.

If you haven’t seen it, you have to. Its the Two Girls, One Cup of music, except slightly more shit is involved.

Review: Nikon D40

After using (and abusing) an old Olympus Z-50 (circa ‘04) digital camera, I decided it was time to look at a new one. After doing a little research at work (I work at a Best Buy), I decided that I would either look at a superzoom camera or a DSLR. I figured that the most important features to me would be along the lines of useabilty, since I’m just starting to get into this whole photography thing.
